Roll-Off Dumpster Rental in Tacoma, WA
Ten to forty yards, delivered on a cable hoist truck, set where you want it with a swinging rear door so you can walk debris in instead of throwing it over the wall.
A roll-off is the open-top container you see on a cable hoist truck — the driver winches it off the rails and sets it on the ground, then winches it back on when it is full. That is why placement needs a straight approach of roughly sixty feet and clear overhead. It is also why the box can go exactly where you want it rather than wherever a truck happens to stop.
We run 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard containers. Every one has a swinging rear door, which sounds like a small thing until you are moving a washing machine or a stack of plywood and realize you can walk it in at ground level instead of lifting it over a four-foot wall. The smaller boxes have lower sides for the same reason.
Pricing is flat rate with the tonnage allowance stated when we quote, not discovered later. Protection boards come standard. We deliver across Tacoma, Pierce County and the South Sound, same day or next day depending on when you call, with next-day swaps if the job outruns the box. Grant has been doing this here since 2012. Call (253) 328-9630 or see the size comparison.
What People Put in a Roll-Off
Mixed Household Debris
Furniture, boxes, broken appliances and the accumulated contents of a garage. The most common load we haul and the easiest one to size.
Wood & Lumber
Framing offcuts, old fencing, deck boards, pallets and pressure-treated posts. Bulky and light, so volume runs out before the weight allowance does.
Drywall & Plaster
Sheetrock, joint compound and old lath and plaster. Plaster is far heavier than modern board, and either one gains weight fast if it gets rained on.
Shingles & Roofing
Tear-off is dense. Keep it in a dedicated container and size on tonnage — see roofing rentals for square counts by box.
Concrete, Brick & Dirt
Heavy inert material goes in a 10 yard filled partway, never mixed into a general load. Clean loads recycle better and cost less to dispose.
Yard & Green Waste
Blackberry canes, ivy, laurel and arborvitae trimmings, moss and thatch. Keep it separate from household junk and it can be handled as clean green waste.
Carpet, Flooring & Insulation
Light and bulky dry, heavy once wet. These are the materials that most often push a load into overage after an untarped week in March.
Commercial Packaging
Cardboard, shrink wrap, banding and pallets out of warehouses in Fife and the tideflats. Volume-heavy, weight-light, ideal for a 40 yard box.
Five Sizes and What Each Holds
The 10 yard has a short footprint and low walls, which makes it the pick for concrete, dirt and tight city driveways. The 15 and 20 yard cover most household and single-room remodel work; the 20 is the one that leaves our yard most often. The 30 yard handles whole-house cleanouts, tenant improvements and big demolition. The 40 yard is for bulk with no weight behind it — packaging, insulation, framing scrap — and it needs about twenty-two feet of length plus room to swing the door. When two sizes look close on paper, take the larger one — a second haul always costs more than the extra capacity.

The driver needs a straight run of about sixty feet to back in and roughly eighteen to twenty-two feet of overhead clearance — low fir branches and service drops are the usual surprise in older Tacoma neighborhoods. Mark the spot with a cone or a chalk X and we will hit it. Protection boards go under the rails automatically, no charge. We will not set a loaded box on a grade, which rules out a few of the steeper North Slope and Old Town driveways, and in the wet season we look hard at soft ground and gravel before committing the truck. On delivery day, keep cars off the spot.

Roll-Off Dumpster Rental FAQs
How much room does a roll-off need?
Plan on the container's own length plus roughly ten feet behind it for the truck to work, and a straight approach of about sixty feet. Overhead is the one people forget: eighteen to twenty-two feet of clearance, which rules out low branches, carports and some power service drops. A standard two-car Tacoma driveway handles a 20 yard fine. Send a photo if the spot is unusual and we will tell you before delivery day.
How high can I load it?
Level with the top rail and no higher. Anything mounded above the sides has to come off before the driver can tarp and haul, and that wastes everyone's morning. Distribute weight evenly front to back rather than piling it all at the door end, and break down bulky items so you are not paying to haul air. Even loading also keeps the container stable when the cable pulls it up the rails.
What is a tonnage allowance and what happens if I go over?
Every flat rate includes a set weight, and the disposal facility weighs the truck coming in. Go over and the extra tonnage is billed at a stated per-ton rate on top. We tell you the allowance when we quote so there is no mystery. The most common way people exceed it in this market is not overloading — it is rain, sitting in an untarped container for a week in November.
Where does the material end up?
Most of what we haul goes to the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center or the LRI landfill at Graham, with recoverable material pulled where the facility can pull it. Clean single-material loads — concrete, clean wood, green waste, cardboard — recycle far better than mixed ones, which is a good reason to separate if your job allows. More on Pierce County disposal.
Can I move the container once it is set?
No. Once a roll-off is on the ground it stays there until the truck comes back. Dragging one across a driveway will gouge the concrete and can damage the rails, and a loaded box is far heavier than people assume. Decide the exact spot before we arrive, walk it with the driver, and if you truly need it repositioned later, call us and we will send the truck.
