Roofing Dumpster Rental in Tacoma, WA
Tear-off containers set close to the ladder line, sized for composition, cedar shake or both layers at once. We know what a Tacoma roof weighs after the moss has been working on it for fifteen years.
Roofing debris is the heaviest common load we haul, and it is easy to underestimate. A square of three-tab is manageable; a square of architectural over a second layer, soaked from a week of Puget Sound drizzle, is a different animal. Cedar shake over skip sheathing, often with composition laid over the top of it, is heavier still. Tell us the layers and the square count and we will size it honestly.
Moss is why half of these jobs exist. North-facing slopes under Douglas fir and big-leaf maple stay shaded and damp year round, moss creeps under the shingle edges, lifts them, and holds water against the mat until the granules go and the deck starts to soften. A roof that looks fine from the street can be spongy underfoot. Budget for some sheathing replacement on anything past twenty years.
Placement decides how fast a tear-off goes. We put the container tight against the eave you are working, so shingles land in the box instead of on the lawn, and we set protection boards under the rails first. On narrow North Slope lots that sometimes means the alley. Same-day and next-day delivery are available, which matters when you have a dry window and want to open the roof. Call (253) 328-9630.
Roof Jobs We Load Every Week
Single-Layer Composition Tear-Off
The common one. Twenty to thirty squares of three-tab or architectural off a Parkland rambler drops neatly into a 20 yard with room for underlayment.
Two-Layer Tear-Off
Composition laid over an older roof doubles the weight without doubling the volume. Size on tonnage here, not on how full the box looks.
Cedar Shake Removal
Common on older Tacoma and Gig Harbor homes. Shake over skip sheathing is bulky and heavy, and the sheathing usually comes off with it.
Moss Damage Repairs
Shaded north slopes under fir cover rot from the edges in. Expect plywood, felt and soft fascia in the load alongside the shingles.
Storm & Limb Damage
A big-leaf maple limb through the deck in a January windstorm. We can often get a container out the same day so the tarp comes off fast.
Flat & Low-Slope Roofs
Torch-down, TPO and old built-up gravel roofs on commercial buildings near the tideflats. Gravel ballast is dense, so plan a smaller container.
Gutter & Fascia Work
Aluminum gutter, rotten fascia and downspouts often come off with the roof. Light material, but it adds bulk you should account for.
Multi-Home Roofing Runs
Contractors working several houses in one HOA plat on South Hill or Bonney Lake can run a standing swap rather than booking each job separately.
Squares, Layers and Container Size
Rough rule from thirteen years of loading these: figure a 10 yard for roughly ten to fifteen squares of single-layer composition, a 15 yard to about twenty-five, and a 20 yard for a typical thirty-square house. Halve those numbers if you are pulling two layers. Cedar shake runs heavier per square than composition, and wet shake heavier again. We would rather set a smaller box and swap it than hand you an overweight ticket, so give us the square count, the layer count and the roof age and we will call it. The tear-off size guide goes deeper.

A roofing container spends its day getting hit with shingles, so where it sits matters. Protection boards go under the rails on every drop — a loaded roofing box concentrates a lot of weight on four small contact points, and 1920s driveway concrete in the North Slope does not forgive that. We keep the container off soft lawn in the wet months, off any slope on the bluff streets near Ruston Way, and clear of the drip line where you will be catching nails. Sweep with a magnet before we come back for it. Old flashing and nails in the grass outlast everyone's patience.

Roofing Dumpster Rental FAQs
Can shingles go in with other debris?
They can, but it is usually a bad idea. Shingles are dense enough that a roofing load hits its weight limit while the container still looks half empty, and adding framing scrap or old furniture on top only raises the ticket. Keep the tear-off in its own box and put the interior debris in a second one. On a full remodel we will often set both at once.
How close can you put the container to the house?
Close. We back in and set it where you want it, usually right along the eave line you are tearing, as long as the truck has a straight approach and no low branches or service drop in the way. Fir and maple limbs are the usual obstacle in older Tacoma neighborhoods. If the driveway is short we will discuss the alley or the street before delivery day.
Is old roofing ever an asbestos concern?
It can be. Some older built-up and roll roofing, along with certain mastics, flashing compounds and cement-asbestos shingles, tested positive in pre-1980 construction. Puget Sound Clean Air Agency requires a good-faith survey by an AHERA-certified inspector before work that could disturb it. We cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container, and we would rather reschedule than haul a contaminated load. Get it checked before you open the roof.
Should I tarp a roofing container?
Yes, and roofers are the worst about skipping it. Shingles are already heavy and asphalt mat holds water. Leave a tear-off open through a wet Tacoma week and you can add meaningful tonnage to a load that was already near the line. We supply a tarp with the container. Pull it over when you knock off for the day and you keep the bill where we quoted it.
Can you deliver early so we start at first light?
Usually. Roofers want the container on site before the crew, especially in summer when everyone is chasing dry weather, and we schedule around that. Book a day ahead and we will set it the afternoon before or first thing in the morning. Same-day is often possible if you call early enough. See same-day rental for how the cut-offs work.
