The 20 is the size we drop more than any other, and not by accident. Three to four tons of allowance sits above what most household and remodel debris will ever reach, four and a half feet of wall is still loadable by hand, and the twenty-two foot floor spreads a mixed load evenly. It is the safe answer when the debris is varied and you cannot picture the pile yet.

Why people choose the 20 yard

Mixed debris is what breaks sizing math. A remodel throws off drywall, lumber, old cabinets, carpet, tile offcuts, insulation and a hundred pounds of unidentifiable junk from the crawlspace. None of it is uniformly heavy or uniformly bulky, so estimating by weight alone or volume alone goes wrong. The 20 gives you slack in both directions, which is why we lean on it for residential projects.

It handles a bigger roof than the 15 without moving into 30 yard territory. Thirty to forty squares of composition, or a smaller cedar shake job, will generally sit inside the allowance. Wet Tacoma tear-off narrows that a little, so if the crew is working through a rain window in March we will talk about staging it or swapping mid-job rather than letting a soaked load run over.

Contractors keep it on site because it clears a week of work without a second trip. Framing scrap, siding cutoffs, packaging, broken pallets and demo debris go in as they come off the job. Will it fit?

Twenty-two feet of container, eight wide, and about six feet behind it for the doors — think thirty feet of clear driveway, which most 1950s to 70s rambler drives south and west of the city have easily. Older gridded neighbourhoods are tighter. The truck needs roughly sixty feet of straight approach, ten feet of width and twenty-three feet of overhead room. Low wires, tree limbs and basketball hoops are the usual culprits. Protection boards are standard on every set.
