The in-between size

15 Yard Dumpster Rental in Tacoma, WA

Sixteen by eight by four feet, two to three tons, about four to five pickup loads. The 15 exists because the gap between a 10 and a 20 is where a lot of real jobs actually land — roofs especially.

Ask ten contractors what a 15 yard is for and half will tell you it is a roofing box. They are mostly right. Four feet of wall is low enough to throw tear-off over from a ladder or a chute, sixteen feet of floor spreads the weight, and the two to three ton allowance covers the shingle math on a typical Tacoma house. It also handles single-room remodels that would drown a 10.

Why people choose the 15 yard

Roofing is where this size earns its keep. Composition tear-off runs roughly 220 to 450 pounds per square depending on layers, granule loss and how much water is in it. Run a 20 to 25 square roof and you land squarely inside a 15. Cedar shake, still on plenty of older Tacoma and Gig Harbor homes, comes in heavier, and moss-soaked wet shake heavier again. See our roofing service.

Single-room jobs fit it well. A full kitchen down to the studs, a large bathroom with tile and a cast tub, a basement finish being pulled out, a deck and railing demo — each of these produces more than three pickup loads and less than a 20 yard box. Renting the right one means you are not paying for empty steel and not calling for a second haul halfway through the week.

It also splits the difference on footprint. At sixteen feet the 15 needs less driveway than a 22 foot container but gives you a foot more depth than a 10. On a 1950s rambler driveway in South Tacoma, Lakewood or Parkland that difference is often what lets the homeowner keep one car parked. If you are torn between sizes, our sizing guide walks through the same questions we ask on the phone.

Good fit for

  • Composition roof tear-off, roughly 20 to 25 squares
  • Full kitchen remodel down to the studs
  • Large bathroom gut with tile and tub
  • Deck, railing and pergola demolition
  • Basement or bonus room strip-out
  • Siding replacement on a small home
  • Multi-room flooring and carpet removal
  • Mid-size garage or attic cleanout

Not the right size for

  • Pure concrete, brick or dirt loads
  • Whole-house cleanouts and full estate clears
  • Large commercial fit-out debris
  • Big framing and siding volume jobs

Will it fit?

Set aside about sixteen feet of length and eight of width, then add clearance at the rear so the barn doors can open. Twenty-six feet of usable driveway is comfortable. The truck wants roughly sixty feet of straight approach, ten feet of width, and near twenty-three feet of vertical clearance while the arm is raised. On sloped Ruston and Old Town lots we will look at the grade before setting. Protection boards under the rails come standard on every drop.

Before delivery, move cars and bins, mark irrigation heads and septic lids, and tell us about new concrete, soft ground, a steep grade or low power lines. Our delivery and driveway protection guide covers all of it.

15 Yard Dumpster FAQs

How many squares of roofing will it take?

Around 20 to 25 squares of single-layer composition in most cases. Two layers roughly halves that. Wet tear-off in a Tacoma winter adds weight you cannot see, and heavy moss growth adds more again. Give us squares, layer count and roof type when you call and we will size it rather than guess. Our moss and roof replacement post covers why the local ones weigh more.

Should I go 15 or 20?

If your debris is dense — tile, plaster, wet tear-off — take the 15 and stay inside allowance. If it is bulky and light — cabinets, framing, furniture, packaging — the 20 yard gives you more room for the same weight ceiling. Volume is cheap; weight is not. When it is genuinely a coin flip we will tell you which way we would go.

Can I load it from a ladder?

That is part of the point of this size. Four feet of wall is low enough to pitch shingles over the rail without a walkboard, which is why roofers ask for it by name. Keep the load level rather than piling one end, and keep everything under the top rail — anything sitting above the rail line cannot legally leave your property on our truck.

Will it damage my driveway?

We put protection boards under the rails on every delivery, standard, and the driver picks the flattest line in. Older Tacoma driveways with hairline cracking or a soft asphalt seam are the ones to flag when you book. Blacktop in August is softer than it looks. Read driveway protection for what we do and what you can do.

What cannot go in it?

No asbestos in any container, ever. Pre-1980 homes need a PSCAA asbestos survey before renovation or demolition that disturbs suspect material — siding, popcorn ceiling, duct wrap, old flooring. Also out: liquid paint, fuel, tires, batteries, refrigerant appliances and hazardous waste. The Pierce County accepted materials list has the full picture.
